Effective October 1, 2017, minimum wage in Saskatchewan will rise from $10.72/hr to $10.96/hr, an increase of $.24. Most employees must be paid at least minimum wage for each hour worked or spent at the disposal of their employer.
The Government of Saskatchewan has implemented a new approach to minimum wage increases by indexing wages. Minimum wage rates will be calculated each year using changes to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which tracks goods and services typically purchased by households and changes to the Average Hourly Wage in Saskatchewan from the previous year.
In order to offer security for minimum wage earners and provide predictability for business owners in the province, the new system will allow for any changes to be announced on or before June 30th of each year and take effect October 1st that same year.
Business owners will benefit with the ability to plan for change and minimum wage earners will benefit from automatic annual reviews to reflect the increased costs of living.
