Update Saturday April 7th – This afternoon, Saskatchewan RCMP were notified of another death resulting from the fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred yesterday. This brings the number of people who died in this collision to 15.
At approximately 5 pm, on Friday April 6th, 2018, Nipawin RCMP along with RCMP from surrounding detachments and multiple emergency personnel responded to a motor vehicle collision on Hwy #35 near the junction of Hwy #335, known as Armley Corner. A bus transporting Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey team members and coaches to a game in Nipawin was hit by a semi.
Nipawin RCMP have now confirmed that of the 29 people on the bus, 14 have died as a result of the collision.
Update/Correction April 7th, 10 am from Nipawin RCMP;
“RCMP officers remain on the scene and the investigation is ongoing.
Yesterday, we advised there were 14 people were sent to hospital; however, we would like to correct this. Fifteen people were sent to hospital with a variety of injuries; including some that are critical in nature. There were 29 people on the bus at the time of the collision, including the driver. There is no change to the number of fatalities, there were 14 people who died in the collision.”
The other fourteen people were sent to hospital with a variety of injuries; three of these people have injuries that are critical in nature. RCMP will not be confirming the identity of the victims at this time, including whether the deceased are players or coaches.
Nipawin RCMP along with police officers from the surrounding Detachments and specialized investigational support units remain on the scene of this fatal collision.
They will be working with our partner agencies to ensure families are notified as soon as possible and the appropriate supports are provided to families and others who are impacted by this extremely tragic incident.
Parents and family of individuals seeking information about their family members who may have been in this collision can call 306-752-8700. This number was announced by the Government of Saskatchewan earlier this evening and we are including it with our media release to ensure it is distributed as widely as possible.

In a media release late last night Broncos President, Kevin Garinger has made the following statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to the families of our staff and athletes as well as to all who have been impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Broncos family is in shock as we try to come to grips with our incredible loss.”
