On December 26, 2017, at approximately 3:05 p.m. Prince Albert RCMP received a call that a 59-year-old, Indigenous male had walked away, and was considered missing, from what was described as a care/support home. The home is located in a rural area approximately 10 kilometres outside of Prince Albert.
The following day, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the male was located deceased alongside a grid road in the area. The Provincial Coroner’s office is assisting with the investigation, but foul play is not suspected at this time.
An initial RCMP review of this matter determined that our police response may not have been sufficient. As a result, the RCMP has launched an internal review into the incident.
In addition, as per RCMP policy around “serious incidents” involving members, and in the interests of accountability, the Saskatchewan RCMP has requested an independent, external investigation into the actions of our members. The Saskatoon Police Service will conduct the external investigation and the RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice appoint an independent observer. As this matter is the subject of an external investigation, no further information can be made available at this time.
The RCMP is committed to advising the public of the outcome of both the internal review and the external investigation at the appropriate time.
The RCMP is not releasing the deceased’s name as disclosing that information at this time would be in breach of the provisions of the Privacy Act.
