JUST ASK VIDEO CONTEST – ENTRY DEADLINE APRIL 27, 2018
Kelsey Trail Health Region – A video contest has been created to engage youth in positive mental health. We want youth to give their take on positive mental health – using their own words and images to describe it; to help create a culture that asking questions and seeking help to improve positive mental health is a strength not a weakness.
The video contest is open to all youth ages 12 to 18. Entries must be received by midnight on April 27, 2018. No late entries will be considered. Please click here for full contest guidelines.
GREAT PRIZES INCLUDE:
- 1st place – $250 plus the video is named the official ‘Just Ask!’ Campaign video
- 2nd place – $200
- 3rd place – $150
- All video entry participants will be entered into four draws for a FitBit.

Inform and engage youth about positive mental health. What positive mental health is and ways to increase it;
Encourage youth to talk about personal issues or concerns;
Change the culture, so that asking questions or seeking help is celebrated as a personal strength rather than a weakness.

POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH
Positive mental health helps us to enjoy life and cope with the normal stressors of life. It involves our emotional, social, physical and spiritual well-being. When our level of positive mental health is high we are thriving – developing our potential, building strong and positive relationships, learning, and making a contribution to our community – and we have a real sense of purpose.
Positive mental health is shaped by our life circumstances which includes the quality of our personal condition (ex. genetic endowment, level of learning, developed skills/abilities, financial state, etc.) and the quality of the settings of our homes, schools, neighbourhoods and workplaces (physical, emotional, social quality). We can do things to improve quality of our life circumstances, especially with the quality of the settings where we live, learn, work and play.
There are 6 simple but significant things people can do every day to increase their positive mental health:
Connect, with family, friends, neighbours, others;
Be Active, walk, run, cycle, dance…also make sure to get enough rest;
Eat Well, balanced amounts of nutritious food;
Take Notice, of your surroundings and of your inner self and savour the moment;
Keep Learning, try something new or rediscover an old interest;
Give, do something nice for someone, volunteer, provide and accept support.
COMMON BARRIERS TO ASKING QUESTIONS OR SEEKING HELP IN THE WORDS OF YOUTH INCLUDE:
What if they….
Laugh at me? Make fun of me? Bully me? Hate me? Think I’m stupid? Think I’m weird? Spread rumours about me? Judge me? Shame me? Don’t understand me? Don’t accept me? Embarrass me? Leave me out? What if I get in trouble?
Barriers include fear of being rejected, judged or teased; feeling shame; feeling embarrassment; not knowing who to reach out to or ask questions; not sure whether there are any solutions or answers; and fear of getting into trouble.
