The 14th Annual Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation (CFFF) Memorial Service was held Sunday, September 10th in Ottawa.
Nipawin Fire Chief Brian Starkell, representing the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs (SAFC) attended and participated in the service.
On Saturday evening, the families of the fallen firefighters recognized at this year’s service were honored with a family supper.
Hosting the Memorial Service this year was the Halifax Fire Service. They were asked to participate to honour the 100th anniversary of the Halifax explosion that occurred in December 1917.

As a tribute to the firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe and to commemorate their courage, their selflessness, and their unwavering commitment to serving our communities, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, recently announced the establishment of the Firefighters’ National Memorial Day.
The second Sunday in September of each year is now designated in memory of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. On that day, the Canadian flag will fly at half-mast on all federal buildings and local RCMP detachments.
