UPDATE: The winds have picked up and, as of 6:00 am, Environment Canada says they are up to 17 km/h at the airport, pushing the windchill factor down to -48
Although Environment Canada has not issued an Extreme cold warning for Nipawin and area, at least not as of 5:00 am this morning, they are showing the current wind chill factor at the Nipawin Airport as being -44.
Maybe they are short staffed for the Holiday because current temperature at the airport shows to be -35° and a light wind of 8 km/h gives us that -44 wind chill. That usually warrants an extreme cold warning. So if you have ice fishing or other outdoor plans for this Family Day, be sure to take precautions, bundle up in lots of layers and don’t forget to tell people where you are going to be.
The good news is that after Tuesday, when the wind chill will reach -30, and we have a 60% chance of snow flurries, the rest of the week we are finally going to see some warmer temperatures with highs up to -6 on Friday.
