We finally received a bit of a reprieve from the extreme cold that we endured over Christmas and New Year’s. I went out one day to patrol and did not see a soul. It would be pretty uncomfortable to ice fish in that extreme cold, even if you were in a shelter. Star City Meat Processor Fined $11,500 For Trafficking Wild Meat

A Star City man recently pleaded guilty in Melfort provincial court to five charges under the federal Migratory Birds Convention Act. An undercover investigation which started in 2014 found that a meat shop in Star City was illegally selling wild goose meat. Now that the winter is officially here with the arrival of cold weather and all this fluffy white stuff, we are seeing more people out hunting coyotes. It seems to be a pastime to travel the countryside looking for coyotes. It is not something that I am into personally, but many people really do enjoy hunting coyotes. Chronic Wasting Disease Head Testing Available to Hunters Until January 8

Ministry of Environment News Release – December 20, 2017

Chronic wasting disease – a fatal, infectious central nervous system disease found in deer, elk, reindeer and moose – was confirmed in three new wildlife management zones in 2017. The newly-identified zones are 44, 39 and 3. Chronic wasting disease has now been confirmed in 32 of Saskatchewan’s 83 wildlife management zones. I have to admit that I am really enjoying writing these columns. As I travel around with my son for hockey and people actually recognize me from my mug shot in the local papers. I am happy to talk about what conservation officers do for a living and some of the rules we enforce.
